People choose to join L'Arche as a support worker for people with learning disabilities (we say 'assistants') for a variety of reasons. You might be looking for a career break or a career change, wanting to give your life new meaning. You might come to L'Arche to learn or develop new skills and attitudes to people with learning disabilities or you might be a care professional seeking a new context and deeper meaning in your work. 

There are several ways to work with us: 

Residential/Live-in Support Assistant
Full training, accommodation and housing expenses, food and a monthly living allowance of £355 is provided. These roles are open to anyone from the UK, EU  and we are able to sponsor a Tier 5 Volunteer Charity Worker Visa for international applicants. Non-residential/Live-out Support Assistant
These roles are open to UK and EU citizens and those who already have permission to work in the UK. 

As of Autumn 2020, we have a greater requirement for people with 1+ years experience and the Care Certificate (or equivalent qualification), although we also have a small number of entry level roles for those new to care.

Whilst we welcome applications from people of all genders, due to restrictions regarding the provision of personal care to female community members, we are prioritising applications from female candidates.

Starting salaries for these roles are:
Entry level starting salary is £21,612 per year. (Base salary £18,924 plus £2688 for sleepovers based on an average of 2 sleepovers a week.)

For those with 1+ year’s experience in UK Care and with Care Certificate/ equivalent qualification the starting salary is £22,268 (Base rate £19580 plus £2688 for sleepovers based on an average of 2 sleepovers a week.)

All roles require a minimum of a 1 year commitment.

Relief/Bank Support Assistants
